DIY: No Sew Window Seat

So my sister, Kurby, decided to get in on a little DIY action herself this week and made a bench for her breakfast banquette in her kitchen.  Here is the finished product (photos taken on iphone so not the best quality):

After:

Before:

She has just had her house completely remodeled, including the kitchen.  This little breakfast nook was added.  My parents were headed down to ATL this weekend and she wanted something in place before their arrival (you remember my mama, the one that doesn't read the blog?)

Supplies:
  • Plywood (cut to fit dimensions of seat)
  • Elmer's Wood Glue
  • Fabric
  • 2 inch Foam from fabric store
  • Staple Gun
  • Batting (from fabric store, enough to wrap around foam and plywood

Step 1.  So Kurby high-tailed her 4.5 month preggo self to Home Depot to pick out some plywood for this project.  She premeasured the seat.  They cut it for her at the store (and not just because she's child bearing, they'd do it for anyone!).  Then she went to the fabric store and got 2 inch foam and batting.  She glued the foam to the plywood with Elmer's wood glue.  (Of course cut the foam board to match the same dimensions as the plywood).

Step 2.  Place the plywood (with the foam now glued on top) on top of the batting and wrap the batting around the plywood.  The purpose of this is to create smoother edges for the finished cushion).   Staple the batting to the board.

Step 2 another view:  This is how the front of the board will look once the batting has been stapled.

Step 2 another view again:  This is how the back of the board will look with the batting stapled (some parts of the board will still be showing, that's okay).

Step 3:  Center your finished fabric onto the board.

Step 4: Staple the fabric on the back.  Helpful hints, if the staples don't completely adhere to the board, use a hammer to finish nailing them into the back of the board.

Step 5:  Put board into place and enjoy!

She will be adding more items to the kitchen to style it.  These were some quick and dirty pictures she sent me in a hurry.  I think it's pretty darn great for involving zero sewing.  That's my kind of project.  The entire project cost just under $100.  (And the expense was in the fabric purchase).

I've got other projects in the air at the moment and will update you soon.  Have a great weekend and enjoy the fall weather.
