Color Crush: Urban Girl Office Supplies

Let's face it.  Not everyone in the world is working in a profession that they love.  Sometimes, work is just...work.  It can be tedious.  Stressful.  Cumbersome.   We don't always have control over the type of work we're performing.  But we *do* have control over the environment in which we suffer! 

So why not make it cheery and colorful?  I love nothing more than a colorful work space.  Somehow it seems to set a positive tone and brighten my day.  (Ok, full disclosure, I happen to love my work). 

Today I'm featuring an Office Color Crush!  Take a look at these fabulous colorful office spaces.  I've also selected some of my favorite office supplies to help brighten any work space.  So love work or hate it, you can feel a bit more chipper regardless.

I don't know about ya'll but I jot notes down at my desk on a continual basis.  I have a gazillion polka dotted notebooks and I can always use more.  Proof here:

 

When the clutter in my space becomes too much, I simply hide it in a storage box.  Six months later, I sort through the paper and find that I can throw about 2/3 of it out because it's no longer relevant.  I love anything Kate Spade or Jonathan Adler.  They offer so much design style.

Waylande Gregory saves the Decade!

 

Ok, so you may recall my complete obsession with Waylande Gregory...(if not, refresh here). 

 

In short, he was essentially the first "Jonathan Adler" who created uber cool ceramics in the early 1900's.  His style is so unique and he really defined American decor.  I could go on and on about him.  But what is my point?

 

Well, recently, I celebrated a birthday--the sort of kind where you leave a previous decade behind and embark on a completely new set of numbers.  People try to make you feel better about those new numbers by justifying, "oh forty is the new thirty", or "you don't look a day over 39."  Well, nothing can make me feel better than fresh botox erasing away a new set of craters on my forehead....

 

That is, until I received my present from my sister Kurby. 

 

 

I knew it had to be good when I opened the box.  For those of you that don't know Zhush, you should.  This shop is filled with super chic stuff and Sue has a kick ass blog too (and no, I don't know her other than from reading her posts but she's adorable as all get out and I'm sure SHE hasn't reached the same decade as I just entered...*bitch*  wink).

Well, let's just say I nearly had a heart attack when I realized that I was now a proud owner of a Waylande Gregory!  The first of my collection (is it a collection if you only have one?)

 

I absolutely love the leopard box. 

 

 

 
Today each piece is produced according to Gregory's high standards and techniques using rich matte glazes, 22K gold and platinum.  It's hand crafted from high-fired porcelain and the designs follow those produced by Gregory.

The Tides Beach Club Kennebunkport

Welcome to The Tides Beach Club at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport.  The inn has been around since 1899 and was recently renovated from top to bottom in 2011.  The inn has 21 guest rooms, two of which have been furnished with Jonathan Adler designs.  The rooms are called "Ocean" and "Sea" and offer private balconies and exquisite style for their guests.  Sign me up!  If I can't stay at Jonathan's personal retreat then this is the next best thing! 

The dining room and reading nook continue the great coastal style with ultra chic flair.  The staff at Earth suggested we try The Tides for another dinner.  We didn't have a chance to visit this time, but it's on our list for next year's visit.

Meet: Waylande Gregory

So,before I carry on with my topic today, I was talking to my mom the other day and casually asked her if she was reading my blog.  She replied, "oh.,.you know?  I haven't read it in about two or three weeks...whatcha been talking about?"   Uh...So now, we're going to do a little test for this lil' mama-o-mine.  Mom, if you're reading, the next time you speak to me, I want you to give me this code word:  "Pumper Nickel Pickle." That will prove that you're reading this blog that I spend every night working on until midnight...

My latest obsession is with Waylande Gregory.  He is considered to have defined American Style.  Think of an uber ceramicist before Jonathan Adler's time.   Born in the early 1900's, Waylande helped shape the art decor era with his innovative ceramics.  His talent was apparent at an early age when he won first prize at the Kansas State Fair.  By the time he was eighteen, he was managing thirty craftsmen in the elaborate interior design of the famous Roosevelt Hotel.  He went on to design at Cowen Pottery in Cleveland and became the resident artist at the Cranbrook Academy.  He moved to NYC where he focused on his terra cotta sculptures.

Waylande Gregory's later years became controversial when he met a well-to-do couple, The Farmers, who desired to financially support an art center in honor of Waylande Gregory located in Middlefield, Massachusetts. Tragically, Mr. Farmer murdered his wife before the project completed and Waylande was tarnished by the association (and years of controversy and law suits). In later years before his death in 1971, he sort of tucked himself away and out of the spotlight.

After the discovery of an immense treasure trove of work in the basement of the Gregory Estates Philanthropic Foundation, Waylande Gregory Studios was founded by Gregory's great-grand nephew Bryan Downey and fashion entrepreneur Mickey Rosarin.   His ceramics can be found at fine stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Nieman Marcus.

I happened to first spot the treasures in the shop of one of my favorite bloggers, Sue from The Zhush.    Her shop is not only loaded with fantastic Waylande Gregory pieces, it has an assortment of unique decor accessories.  Definitely worth the visit (and no, I'm not paid to endorse Zhush in any way, I just know a great find when I spot it).

My design crush, Miles Redd

There are a handful of highly skilled and talented interior decorators for which I have developed a case of severe 'design-envy'.  In all honesty, my desire goes beyond envy.  These are designers that I consider the Gods of Interiors.  To the point that I may completely fumble my words were I to ever meet them in person.  Or worse, faint.  I would liken this to a teenage girl's hysteria for Justin Bieber or my childhood crush on Ricky Schroeder.  (Only I used to fantasize about one day marrying Ricky.  Now, I just dream about meeting these fine decorators). 

I'm talking about Jonathan Adler, Jamie Drake, Mary McDonald, Bunny Williams.  And Miles Redd.  Oh yes, Miles.

Miles himself is based in NYC. He was raised in Atlanta but found himself venturing to NYC to study painting. He was more interested in set design. As his love for interior design flourished, he found himself taking on projects for friends and decorating their spaces. He turned it into an actual business in 1998. Since, he has also been named creative director for Oscar De La Renta Home. More about Miles here. 


Miles decorated the NYC apartment of some of our dear friends.  Their apartment exudes worldly charm.  There is wild use of patterns and color in an uber-chic and tasteful manner.   I see this style transcended in Mile's other interiors as well.

1. Lacquered walls (shown above in Yves Klein-blue).  Miles style is high gloss and super chic.  It was the below photo of lacquered walls that inspired me to paint my own study in a high gloss (check house tours in the future for a study tour).

2.  Ruffled Drapery.  Miles is a huge fan of using a dainty and feminine ruffle as an accent to his often unlined curtains.  This is so delicate.  The unlined window treatments offer privacy but also are sheer enough to allow light to enter the room.

3. Bold Mix of Vibrant Colors.  His selections are often saturated in color.  Buttery teals, vibrant fuchsias.  They are just magnificent to absorb.  It reminds me very much of Tricia Guild's wonderful use of textiles.

4. Leather Covered Doors.  Miles creates exquisite beauty with leathered covered doors that are further accessorized with nail stud detail.

Miles Redd has a wonderful sense of humor when using style and patterns.  He mixes chevron with floral, and blends hues of the same color wheel together.  The end result is to die for!  Now, you understand my design crush.
