VHH Dream Dressing Room

It's the new year and while many people are focused on giving themselves a little personal renovation (shedding holiday weight or eating more healthily), I find myself brainstorming about how to make-over unfinished areas of my home.

Recently, I spent some time brainstorming about a little space that I have between my bedroom and master bathroom.  Calling it a "dressing room" would be an over-statement as it's mostly a walk-in closet with a small hallway that bridges the two rooms together.

Still, I decided to have some fun in creating my dream dressing space:

Vivid Hue Home Dream Dressing Room

Remember, this is ME we're talking about.   I mix colors and patterns and styles all up in a blender and see how they end up.  For me, decorating is about taking a risk and having fun.  Decor is ever-changing, always evolving and so, why not approach decorating in a playful way?

Here are my essentials for a Dream Dressing Room:

1. Color: I am obsessed with the color coral this season.   Soon, the shop will be filled with lacquered coral lamps, leopard and coral pillows and table accessories in, you guessed it, coral!  So it was a no brainer to start with the coral wallpaper as a background.

2. Seating.  I must have a space that can hold all of my discarded clothing during a fashion crisis, right?  And of course, it's nice to have a sitting spot for putting on shoes.

3. Vanity Space.   Sure, there may be a vanity in my bathroom, but it's nice to create a feminine space where I can sit to apply makeup or jewelry.  A unique dresser is great for giving the space a little more interest (and nicely storing jewelry, makeup, handbags or other fashion accessories).

4. Lighting.  Good lighting is CRITICAL for a dressing area.  I recommend sconces for vanity dressing and pendant lights!  And keep in mind, if the lights aren't helping you achieve your ultimate best look...it's time to get those lights on a dimmer--or get a new light.   (Remember, this is a dream space which allows me to fantasize that I *always* look darn good when I leave the house)

Glitz with Gold: Top Gold Flatware Picks

As I've been planning my holiday tablescape for this year, I've become obsessed with gold flatware.
There's just something about the gold, it adds a little glitz and glamour to the table.

Earlier this week I shared the Gray Malin Photography Collections and mentioned that I'd LOVE to have a print from La Dolce Vita collection (specifically 'Positano').

Today, I share with you my favorite gold plated flatware collections.  And yes, these are also on my list for Santa.

The Rose Gold Flatware by West Elm is a steal with four place settings for $112.  If budget weren't a factor, I'd choose the Gorham Argento Gold Luster set on Zappos.  I love that the knife is also gold plated and the quality appears top notch.  Of course, some would say, if you're only using the gold flatware a few times a year to glitz and glam up a holiday table, then there's no need to invest in a tremendously expensive set of gold.  You can achieve the same goal with a less expensive setting.

If you're one that plans to stay gold year after year, then invest in better quality as it does take a bit more work to maintain the gold flatware from tarnishing.

Ballard Designs' Southern Living Fairhope comes brand new with a vintage patina appearance.  They could easily pass as a family heirloom.  It's possible to have each piece monogrammed.  They don't offer as bright of a gold as some of the other choices but it may save you the trouble of having to maintain the items from tarnish.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with gold at the table!  It ups the glamour factor to the nth degree...now...if only Santa is reading this!  (hint hint).

Do you already own gold flatware?  How do you find the maintenance?  Which do you like out of the choices above?

Santa, if you're reading, I'd like selection #2!

Cheers,

Meet: Waylande Gregory

So,before I carry on with my topic today, I was talking to my mom the other day and casually asked her if she was reading my blog.  She replied, "oh.,.you know?  I haven't read it in about two or three weeks...whatcha been talking about?"   Uh...So now, we're going to do a little test for this lil' mama-o-mine.  Mom, if you're reading, the next time you speak to me, I want you to give me this code word:  "Pumper Nickel Pickle." That will prove that you're reading this blog that I spend every night working on until midnight...

Sorry ya'll had to witness that shakedown.  Now, onto my latest love...

My latest obsession is with Waylande Gregory.  He is considered to have defined American Style.  Think of an uber ceramicist before Jonathan Adler's time.   Born in the early 1900's, Waylande helped shape the art decor era with his innovative ceramics.  His talent was apparent at an early age when he won first prize at the Kansas State Fair.  By the time he was eighteen, he was managing thirty craftsmen in the elaborate interior design of the famous Roosevelt Hotel.  He went on to design at Cowen Pottery in Cleveland and became the resident artist at the Cranbrook Academy.  He moved to NYC where he focused on his terra cotta sculptures.

Waylande Gregory's later years became controversial when he met a well-to-do couple, The Farmers, who desired to financially support an art center in honor of Waylande Gregory located in Middlefield, Massachusetts. Tragically, Mr. Farmer murdered his wife before the project completed and Waylande was tarnished by the association (and years of controversy and law suits). In later years before his death in 1971, he sort of tucked himself away and out of the spotlight.

After the discovery of an immense treasure trove of work in the basement of the Gregory Estates Philanthropic Foundation, Waylande Gregory Studios was founded by Gregory's great-grand nephew Bryan Downey and fashion entrepreneur Mickey Rosarin.   His ceramics can be found at fine stores such as Bergdorf Goodman and Nieman Marcus.

I happened to first spot the treasures in the shop of one of my favorite bloggers, Sue from The Zhush.    Her shop is not only loaded with fantastic Waylande Gregory pieces, it has an assortment of unique decor accessories.  Definitely worth the visit (and no, I'm not paid to endorse Zhush in any way, I just know a great find when I spot it).

Overboard with Olioboard

Today, I discovered Olioboard. My dream come true.

Olioboard is to home decor what Polyvore is to fashion design.

Polyvore is superb if your intent is to search thousands of clothes styles and design a perfectly accessorized outfit.  But what about a perfectly accessorized home?

Admittedly, I get overly gitty about home design but imagine my zeal when I discovered literally thousands of interior design elements already loaded and selected from the very designers I covet?

Dwell, Zinc Door, Layla Grayce, 2 Modern, The Well Appointed House, cb2, inhabit, Ralph Lauren, West Elm, Urban Outfitters, Land of Nod, Lot 26 Studio...

Are you kidding me?
All of my lovers under one roof...er, that's a little awkward!
