Gone Fishing

Hi loves.  No, I haven't forgotten about ya'll.  I'm just taking a little R&R for the next week with the family.  Don't let this magnificent photo fool you.  I'm headed to Disney with the kids and EG for spring break along with hoards of other *magical* families.  It will be a miracle if we all come back speaking to one another (or maybe that will be a blessing if we don't!).

EG and I had about four knock down drag out disagreements* tonight as we were getting the baggage packed.  Why is preparing for a trip so stressful?
(*I'm fudging on the extent of the knock down drag-outs by the way.  It was really more like three).

Here's hoping that we get outta here tomorrow without a hitch.  Send magical rainbow, princessy, fairy tale thoughts our way that we have a great vacation.  And all that crap.

I'll be back online within a week.

Misses and kisses.  xoxox

Spaces | Kennebunkport, ME

My dream shop is Spaces | Kennebunkport.  It's where I first discovered John Robshaw bedding.  Every time I visit, I linger in each section of the small store so I can absorb all of the decor accessories.  I pick each item up a hundred times (in my head) and envision where I'd put it in my home.  It's the exact type of shop I would love to open one day (and at the beach no less).

The John Robshaw bedding is usually an entire half of the store.  I want to sink away into the bedding.  The prints are so colorful and crisp.  I never grow tired of taking in all of the details of the designs.  It's like visiting an art gallery for me.   (Remember ABC Carpet?)

Spaces has samples of Madeline Weinrib textiles and pillows galore  and I oogle over the ones I would select if I were re-doing a bedroom.

Love these gurgling fish pitchers.  I almost bought one but then decided that I really like them best when they are all together because they look like art.   I also fell in love with this Jamie Young Hide Mirror.  It's hard to tell from this photo but the mirror perimeter is covered in white faux animal fur.  It's super cool.  But a tad pricey at $700 and I couldn't think of a place to hang this baby in my house, so it stayed at Spaces

I could really get used to this beach blogging gig...Nothing like sitting outside feeling the beach breeze for inspiration.   (And mama, glad to see you've finally gotten your act together and you're checking this blog daily!  Bout damn time, lady!)

The White Barn Inn, Kennebunk

Courtesy White Barn Inn

Eating at The White Barn Inn is a special treat on our visit to Kennebunk.  We are lucky to have found two sisters that babysit for us each summer during our vacation here.  Every year, we call the girls and arrange for a night or two out without the kids.  Last night, EG and I had dinner at the White Barn Inn.   It's worth the splurge if you're in the area.  The restaurant is the recipient of the prestigious AAA Five-Diamond Award for the 11th consecutive year, the only restaurant in Maine and one of only three restaurants in New England to earn this distinction.   The service is impeccable.  The staff is attentive without being stuffy . The food is delicious.

Here we are at dinner.  We didn't want to ask for our picture together so we each took turns snapping iphone photos of each other.

We had Hall Cabernet Sauvignon named, "Jack's Masterpiece."  We selected it because our son's name is Jack...and we love Hall...and it was very tasty.  I was quite impressed by the marketing on the cork with the phone number and website for the vineyard.  I don't believe I've seen this before but it's genius!

The details around the restaurant are consistent with New England. The structure of the restaurant is very barn-like.  Paintings on the walls are scenes of the Kennebunk beaches.  And I have always loved the brass adornments on the tables. Every table has a different animal (from crabs to lobsters to birds).  My favorite is the Crane.

It's been a beautiful week for weather.  Yesterday I was able to hit a few antique stores and I scored a brass lobster for our study and some bleached antlers for our coffee table.  Photos to follow!  Today I hope to skip out for more antique shops while the kids play on the beach!

I've got some awesome home stores to talk about later this week!

Kennebunk Bound

Today, we are headed to our annual Kennebunkport beach trip.  We started this tradition years ago when the kids were just tots...

Vivster at age 1

Some years we've gone with friends and family and other years, it's just our own little family of four.  Each year we make great memories that keep us returning another year for more.   It's not uncommon for the kids to run right down to the beach when we first arrive.  In their excitement, they start out by testing their toes in the water.  This ends up with their entire bodies splashed with waves--clothes and all.

We're always sure to relax during this week.  We're usually there in August and the days are hot but the nights are cool.  It's the perfect combination for the weather.  We make no schedule for ourselves and spend some days playing at the beach and others times shopping through the town.

One of our favorite things to do in the morning is to get out on the beach to look for shells and spot all of the dogs going for a walk with their owners (all dogs must clear out by a certain time so they get their walks in early).  One year, I captured a few silhouette photos in the early morning sun with my new camera.  I love this one.  Jack is letting Vivi play with his toy light saber...which is a miracle in and of itself.  But, of course, I also love the display of sibling love!

Most hear "Kennebunk" and can't help but think of the Bush's.  They've had a home compound here for years and sometimes we even spot them around the town.  One year I saw Barbara out for a morning walk on the beach.  I tried not to act too much like the paparazzi and pretended to be capturing the waves behind her.  Ha, I'm sure she knew darned well what I was up to!

I'm excited for our return this year.  I'm going to attempt to make a few posts during this vacation week.  But as I was frantically trying to think of topics to write in advance so I could fill the queue for next week, I decided not to randomly create posts just to create them.  Quality over Quantity people

Plus, if my own mama isn't even reading my blog...who the heck else is??? (Still waiting on that code word, remember here?)

Summer Break Begins!

There are many markers used to determine the start of summer...Summer Solstice, a high school graduation, a June vacation, the flowers blooming in the yard, birds chirping in the trees...

This year, for our family, it's defined by the end of our son's first official year at school.  Sure, it was only Kindergarten but he was at a 'real' school, with 'real attendance' and homework, and a schedule.  The last day of school for him was yesterday.  Thus, the beginning of summer starts today!

For me, this means later bedtime for the kids, cooking out on the grill, sitting on the patio watching the kids run through the grass, vacations to the beach and lake house, social gatherings with friends, day trips with the kids to exciting places, day camps for the kids, swimming in the pool, driving with the sunroof open and the music blaring...

What does the start of summer mean to you?
